Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle sur un petit flan épais, parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Beau buste de Constantin Ier de haut relief. Joli revers inhabituel. Jolie patine marron. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’orgine

Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (B*).
Obverse translation : "Imperator Constantinus Augustus", (L’empereur Constantin auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI INVI-C-TO COMITI/ T|F// BTR.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié à demi nu, debout à droite, la tête tournée à gauche, le manteau sur les épaules, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au Compagnon le Soleil Invincible).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Cuirasse lisse et épaulière cloutée. Ptéryges invisibles. Césure de légende de revers inhabituelle, seulement un exemplaire signalé par P. M. Brun à VIenne.
Type 3 ribbons with rounded ends. Smooth breastplate and studded shoulder guard. Invisible pteryges. Unusual reverse legend caesura, only one example reported by PM Brun in Vienna

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
