Historical background
CONSTANTINE I THE GREAT
(+337)
Consecration of Constantine II, Constans and Constantius II
Constantine gradually becomes Christian-friendly during his reign. He first proclaimed religious freedom with Licinius by the rescript of Milan in 313. Lactantius, responsible for the education of Crispus, made Constantine's dream, the day before the battle of the Milvian Bridge, a Christian prophecy. Nevertheless, Constantine was baptized only on his deathbed in Nicomedia on May 22, 337. He was the last emperor deified after his death..
