Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A’b) ; diadème formé de gemmes et de laurier.
Obverse translation : "Constantinus Maximus Augustus", (Constantin le grand auguste).

Reverse description : Deux soldats debout face à face, vêtus militairement, tenant chacun une haste renversée et un bouclier au milieu, deux étendards.
Reverse translation : “Gloria Exercitus”, (La gloire de l’armée).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Diadème composite formée de laurier et cabochons. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum. Ce type semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constantius and Helena. He was appointed Caesar to the death of his father 25 July 306 and was proclaimed august 25 December 307. He married Fausta, daughter of Maximian, who will give him five children, three august. The first twenty years of his reign are dedicated to become the main august against Maximian, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin and Licinius II. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed 22 May 337.
