Exemplaire sur un flan large et ovale bien centré avec un buste particulier à l’usure régulière. Revers inhabituel. Patine verte

Obverse description : Buste casqué et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (C*01).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Augustus”, (Constantin auguste).


Reverse legend : ROMAE A-ETERNAE/ P|R// RP.
Reverse description : Rome casquée et drapée assise à droite sur un bouclier tenant un bouclier inscrit X/V.
Reverse translation : “Romæ Æternæ Populus Romanus”, (À la Rome éternelle du Peuple romain).


Poids très léger. Casque orné et décoré de deux étoiles à six rais. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Ptéryges fines. Césure de légende de droit inhabituelle. Ce type semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est la première fois que nous proposons ce type avec cette officine à la vente.

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constantius and Helena. He was appointed Caesar to the death of his father 25 July 306 and was proclaimed august 25 December 307. He married Fausta, daughter of Maximian, who will give him five children, three august. The first twenty years of his reign are dedicated to become the main august against Maximian, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin and Licinius II. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed 22 May 337.
