Exemplaire sur un petit flan bien centré à l’usure régulière. Beau portrait inhabituel de Constantin Ier de frappe molle. Joli revers. Patine vert foncé

Obverse legend : IMP CONSTAN-TINVS AG.
Obverse description : Buste casqué, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant, tenant un sceptre sur l'épaule et un poignard de la main gauche (E*7).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP/ VOT/PR// PTR.
Reverse description : Deux Victoires debout, face à face, posant un bouclier sur un cippe.
Reverse translation : “Victoriæ Lætæ Principium Perpetuæ/ Vota Populi Romani", (À la victoire heureuse et durable du Prince/ Vœux du Peuple romain).

Commentary


Poids très léger. Avec son argentures superficielle. Au revers, nous ne distinguons aucun symbole sur le cippe. Sur cet exemplaire le cippe ressemble plutôt à une colonne.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
