Commentary

Extremely light weight. Richly ornamented consular bust with the trabea formed of the toga picta and the toga palmata. On this example, we seem to see the left hand. This type seems much rarer than general works suggest and is not included in Doctor Bastien's corpus on busts. Seems completely new and not listed for the bust. On the reverse on the altar, the globe is decorated with a band with five globules and at the base with six globules placed three by three in a triangle separated by a median line which does not correspond to any of the 97 globes listed in the RMBT, p. 97 for the globes from the Trier workshop

Historical background

CONSTANTINE I THE GREAT

(07/25/306-05/22/337)

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
