Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (B*01).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Augustus”, (Constantin auguste).
Reverse
Reverse legend : SARMATI-A DEVICTA// P*AR.
Reverse description : Victoria (la Victoire) debout à droite, tenant une palme de la main droite et un trophée reposant sur l'épaule gauche ; le pied droit posé sur un captif sarmate assis à droite, les mains liées dans le dos.
Reverse translation : “Sarmatia Devicta”, (La Sarmatie soumise).
Commentary
Poids lourd. Rubans de type 2 aux extrémités bouletées. Égide posée sur la cuirasse. Épaulière cloutée. Ptéryges fines. P. Ferrando a recensé 8 exemplaires dont quatre en musées.

Augustus
Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
