Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type sur un petit flan parfaitement centré. Très beau portrait de Constantin Ier. Revers fantastique et énigmatique. Magnifique patine grise avec des reflets dorés. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Commentary
Poids léger. Avec l’intégralité de son argenture superficielle. Césure de légende de droit inhabituelle. Casque à plumet lisse. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Ptéryges larges. Au revers, autel avec une couronne ornée d’une petite croix (signe chrétien ?) signalé comme tel par P. M. Bruun, The System of the Vota Coinage, p. 4ss et P. M. Bruun, The Christian Signs on the Coins of Constantine I, p. 8. Semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.

On the reverse, altar with a crown decorated with a small cross (Christian sign?) reported as such by PM Bruun, The System of the Vota Coinage, pp. 4ff and PM Bruun, The Christian Signs on the Coins of Constantine I, p. 8. Seems much rarer than general works suggest

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
