Commentary

Luna 1 was launched on January 2, 1959, from Baikonur, marking the first successful launch of the Luna interplanetary probe program. Luna 1 thus became the first human-made object to reach escape velocity from Earth, thus freeing itself from Earth's gravity. See a commentary on the medal: https://medaille.hypotheses.org/479

Historical background

from 1944

The exploration of the solar system constitutes the first stage, one of the major events of the second half of the 20th century on the scientific level, but also more broadly for our societies, by the prodigious expansion of this new frontier..
