Born in Limoges in 1329, Gregory was the last French pope and was the nephew of Pope Clement VI. Elected pope on December 30, 1370, he was consecrated on January 5, 1371. His pontificate was partly devoted to bringing together France, England, Spain and Naples. He died in Rome on March 26, 1378 and was succeeded by Pope Urban VI..
