Avignon had been part of the marquisate of Provence and belonged to the counts of Toulouse. The city became autonomous in 1239. The popes, owners of the Comtat-Venaissin from 1274, settled in Avignon in 1309 under the pontificate of Clement V. Clement VI bought the city in 1348 from Joan of Naples.
