Historical background

Comoros - Archipelago

The Comoros archipelago form a set of islands located southeast of Africa, east of Tanzania and northwest of Madagascar. These islands are divided between an independent country, the Union of Comoros, and Mayotte, a French overseas collectivity. In 1946, the islands are not administratively attached to Madagascar and form for the first time in history a united and recognized administrative entity (TOM). After independence in the 1960s African countries, a number of intellectuals are beginning to demand independence. The country gets 6 July 1975 but claims sovereignty of Mayotte or all of the Comoros.
