Historical background

COMMODUS

(166-31/12/192)

Augustus with Marcus Aurelius

Commodus was born in the purple on August 31, 161. Son of Marcus Aurelius and young Faustina, his twin brother died very early, in 165 or 166. He received the title of Caesar on this date but he was not really associated with power. only at the time of the revolt of Avidius Cassius in 175, after the death of Faustina Young in Cappadocia. For the first time since Nerva, the emperor did not choose his successor by adoption, but raised his own offspring to the Augustate. Commode, associated with the Empire from 176-177, will succeed his father in 180.
