Exemplaire sur un flan bien centré des deux côtés. Belle tête de Claude II à l’usure superficielle. Revers de toute beauté. Patine marron avec des reflets métalliques

Obverse description : Buste radié et cuirassé de Claude II à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant.
Obverse translation : “Imperator Claudius Augustus”, (L’empereur Claude auguste).

Reverse legend : GENIVS EXERCI/ -|(Z INVERSÉ).
Reverse description : Genius (le Génie) coiffé du modius, debout de face, regardant à gauche, tenant une patère de la main droite et une corne d’abondance de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Genius Exercitus”, (Le Génie de l’armée).
Commentary
Variante très rare avec la lettre Z inversée sous la forme de trois traits horizontaux comme sur l’exemplaire du Kunsthistorisches Museum de Vienne (coll. Markl n° 49962) (RIC. Temp. n° 238/3 avec la titulature longue de Claude II. Semble complètement inédit et non recensé. Devrait trouver sa place soit sous le numéro 371 ou bien sous une nouvelle dénomination.

Claude II is appointed Master of the Cavalry after the defection of Auréolus and is part of the plot which eliminates Gallien. Having promised Auréolus his life after the death of Gallienus, he nevertheless lets his troops massacre him after the surrender of Milan. Claudius II wins a brilliant victory over the Goths at Naissus, in Upper Moesia. Unfortunately, the vanquished spread the plague among the victors and Claude fell victim to it. He is deified after his death and an important restitution coinage is minted by Aurelian first in 270, then by Constantine I, who claimed to be descended from Claudius II, at the beginning of the 4th century..
