Commentary

Historical background

CLAUDIUS AND AGRIPPINA THE YOUNGER

(50-54)

Agrippina (15-59) is the daughter of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, sister of Caligula. She married Domitius Ahenobarbus, from whom she gave birth to Nero in 37. After marrying her uncle in 50, she managed to have her son adopted by her husband, who became Caesar. All that remains for Agrippina, to ensure power for her offspring, is to get rid of the husband who has become a nuisance. Claude is poisoned, Britannicus dismissed and Nero succeeds Claude. Agrippina is then closely associated with power. This presence having become too pressing, Nero finally agreed to kill his mother in 59.
