Historical background

CLAUDIUS and DIVUS ANGUSTUS

Claude, son of Néron Drusus and Antonia, is the grandson of Marc Antoine and Octavie by his mother and of Livie, wife of Auguste by his father. He is also the great-nephew of Augustus, the nephew of Tiberius, the brother of Germanicus, the uncle of Caligula and Agrippina, the great-uncle of Nero. Auguste is in fact also her paternal grandfather since Livie married him. It is quite normal that Claude, at the beginning of his reign, wants to link his filiation to the founder of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
