Commentary

Tranche inscrite “D’APRES ROBERT LOUIS 1976”.
Edge inscribed “AFTER ROBERT LOUIS 1976”. Robert Louis (Douai, February 20, 1902 - Vincennes, September 22, 1965) was a French designer, heraldry specialist, and heraldic artist. From 1943 to 1965, Robert Louis designed almost all of the stamps in the series of coats of arms of the French provinces and cities. In 1966, his daughter Mireille replaced him for the design of the last three stamps (coats of arms of Auch, Mont-de-Marsan, and Saint-Lô). His talent was also used on stamps of the French postal service operating abroad, in Andorra and in the French Zone in West Germany. In addition to these representations of traditional coats of arms, he also created from scratch a number of coats of arms for the 90 French departments, based on scattered elements from the heraldic history of the provinces, but also on elements related to geography. He also created, in the same way, several coats of arms for French municipalities. He is also responsible for the resumption of Jules-Clément Chaplain's composition for the unofficial coat of arms of the French Republic.
