On désigne particulièrement sous le nom de Fête de la Fédération la fête qui fut célébrée sur le Champ-de-Mars de Paris, le 14 juillet 1790, premier anniversaire de la prise de la Bastille. Dans un climat d'union nationale, on y vit une grande foule réunie autour du roi et des députés des 83 départements. Louis XVI assista à cette fête, et y prêta serment à la Nation et à la loi.
L'enthousiasme y fut porté à son comble. Une seconde fédération eut lieu le 14 juillet 1792 ; mais l'union et l'entraînement qui avaient marqué la première avaient déjà fait place à la méfiance. Pendant les Cent-Jours (1815), on tenta de renouveler les anciennes fédérations à Paris et en Bretagne, mais sans aucun résultat.
Cet événement est fêté, tous les 14 juillet depuis 1880, en tant que Fête nationale française.
The name Fête de la Fédération refers specifically to the festival celebrated on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris on July 14, 1790, the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. During the Hundred Days (1815), attempts were made to renew the old federations in Paris and Brittany, but without any results. This event has been celebrated every July 14 since 1880 as the French National Holiday.
