Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) est un peintre français devenu célèbre par ses représentations de « fêtes galantes ». Il est un des créateurs représentants du mouvement rocaille. Inspiré par la commedia dell'arte, il aime représenter le théâtre dans ses tableaux, y compris dans le tableau le Gilles figurant sur cette médaille
