CHINA - SINKIANG PROVINCE
(XXth)
An autonomous territory in northwest China, Xinjiang occupies a vast region that is both desert and mountainous. It has many ethnic minorities including Turkish Uyghurs. The ancient Silk Road that connected China to the Middle East passed through Xinjiang. Traces of this past can be found in the traditional open-air bazaars of its oasis towns Hotan and Kashgar..
