Historical background

CHARTRES - COUNTY OF CHARTRES - CHARLES OF VALOIS

(1293-1319)

Charles de Valois (1270-1325) is the younger brother of Philippe IV le Bel and the father of Philippe VI de Valois. After the ordinance of 1315, Charles sold his right to mint the county of Chartres to his nephew Philippe V le Long in 1319. After the death of his father, then of his brother, the county of Chartres was definitively attached to the kingdom in 1328.
