Commentary

Ce denier a été publié dans les RTSENA 6 et dans le RTSENA 7, n° 1943, p. 204. Bruno Foucray a démontré dans les Cahiers numismatiques de décembre 2023 que le motif du revers, avec le personnage tenant deux croix, est apparu principalement dans le Kent au début du VIIIe siècle. Il attribue cette monnaie à Chartres, notamment parce que ce personnage est repris vers 754-758 sur certains deniers de Pépin le Bref avec la légende CARN pour Carnotis (Chartres) et sur des deniers de Charlemagne frappés vers 768-775 avec la légende KARN.
This denarius was published in RTSENA 6 and in RTSENA 7, no. 1943, p. 204. Bruno Foucray demonstrated in the Cahiers numismatiques of December 2023 that the reverse motif, with the figure holding two crosses, appeared mainly in Kent at the beginning of the 8th century. He attributes this coin to Chartres, in particular because this figure appears around 754-758 on certain denarii of Pepin the Short with the legend CARN for Carnotis (Chartres) and on denarii of Charlemagne struck around 768-775 with the legend KARN
