Commentary

Le compas et l’équerre sont très souvent associés dans un symbole ambivalent d’équilibre : la fixité et la mobilité, le passif et l’actif, la matière et l’esprit. Le compas est l’outil du Créateur et du grand Architecte de l’Univers. L’écartement des branches du compas obéit à des règles précises et varie selon les trois degrés : apprenti, compagnon, maître.

Historical background

CHARTRES AND THE PAYS CHARTRAIN

Capital of the Carnutes, Chartres later became Autricum. Seat of a county in the 10th century, Chartres belonged to the house of Blois then to the house of Châtillon and finally it was sold to Philippe le Bel in 1286. Apanage, the county was erected into a duchy in 1528 for the benefit of Renée de France , Duchess of Ferrara. Henri IV was consecrated there on February 27, 1594 in the cathedral. Under Louis XIV, the duchy of Chartres is given to the house of Orléans whose heir will carry, until Louis-Philippe, the title of duke of Chartres.
