Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - PROVINS AND SENS

(11th century)

Provins belonged to the count of Champagne and to the diocese of Sens. Since 1019, the county of Champagne has been in the hands of the house of Blois. Stephen II (1037-1048) then Eudes II of Champagne (1048-1063) succeeded Eudes I (1019-1037) who was also count of Blois and Chartres. Coinage developed due to the birth of Champagne fairs.
