Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - BISHOPRIC Meaux - GAUTIER I

(1045-1082)

The episcopate of Gautier I is located between those of Dagobert around 1030 and Robert (1082-1085). The power seemed divided between the counts and bishops. We on the other hand a common coinage Troyes and Meaux in the tenth century. Thibaut I (1063-1089) abolished this duality and clapped money Gautier I imitated the blessing dexter. Gautier probably received from King Henry I. authorization mint unless Philip I (1060-1108) it has not granted the right to coin money.
