Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF MEAUX - BOUCHARD

(1120-1134)

Meaux had been a Carolingian workshop after the edict of Pistres. For Meaux, there were five different types of coins including the estévenant imitated from Besançon. Episcopal coinage does not seem to begin before the 11th century. We only have coins for Gauthier II (1145-1202), Bouchard, Renaud (1158-1161), Étienne (1162-1171) and Pierre (1172-1174). The episcopate of Bouchard is placed between those of Manasses I (1103-1120) and Manasses II (1134-1159).
