Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - ARCHBISHOP OF REIMS - SAMSON DE MAUVOISIN

(1148-1161)

Reims had a mint since the Edict of Pistres in 864. The archbishops usurped monetary law during the 10th century. Aldaberon crowned Hugues Capet in 987. The new coinage with bilinear legend seems to appear under the episcopate of Samson de Mauvoisin who succeeded Renaud II des Prés (1128-1140) who crowned Louis VII in 1137. On the death of Samson de Mauvoisin, it was Henri I of France (1121-1175), the younger brother of Louis VII, who succeeded him (1162-1175).
