Historical background

CATALONIA - COUNTY OF BARCELONA - JAMES I OF ARAGON

(1213-1276)

Jacques I of Aragon (1205-1276) is the son of Pierre II King of Aragon (1196-1213), killed in the battle at Le Muret. Jacques succeeds his father under the regency of Marie de Montpellier. His reign is one of the longest in the history of Spain, sixty-three years. He successively married Eleanor of Castile then Yolande of Hungary and is the father of Peter III of Aragon. James I died in 1276 and his son Peter III (1276-1285) who then ascended the throne of Aragon was the irreducible enemy of the French: it was he who seized Sicily in 1282 and provoked the Sicilian Vespers . Philip III the Bold and Peter III both died in 1285.
