Historical background

CATALONIA - COUNTY OF BARCELONA - ALFONSO II OF ARAGON

(1162-1196)

Alphonse of Aragon (1152-1196) is the son of Raymond-Béranger, count of Barcelona and Pétronille, queen of Aragon. Alfonso of Aragon became King of Aragon in 1162. In 1174 he married Sancie (1154-1208), daughter of Alfonso VII of Castile. By dint of conquests he succeeded in invading Roussillon and Béarn. After the death of Raymond-Béranger, his brother, count of Provence, he inherited his possessions but opposed the counts of Toulouse. On his death in 1196, his son Pierre II (1176-1213) inherited the throne of Aragon while his other son became count of Provence under the name of Alphonse II.
