Commentary

Cet aurelianus semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est la deuxième fois que nous proposons ce type à la vente !.
This aurelianus appears to be much rarer than general works suggest. This is the second time we have offered this type for sale!

Historical background

CARUS

(09/282-07/283)

Carus is proclaimed in Rhaetia at the end of August 282. Probus is assassinated in Sirmium. Carus entrusts the rank of Caesar to his eldest son Carin at the end of October, then to his other son, Numérien, in December. Carus named his august sons in March 283. In the spring of 283, he began a brilliant campaign against the Sassanids, took Ctesiphon, their capital, but was struck down by lightning in July 283. Numerian, who accompanied him, was charged with bringing back the troops.
