Ce denier est frappé sur un flan large et irrégulier. Exemplaire recouvert d’une patine grise. Petite faiblesse de frappe à 4 heures au revers se retrouvant à 7 heures au droit

Commentary


Ce rare type monétaire se retrouve dans le dépôt monétaire d’Avignon (884-887). Georges Depeyrot mentionne cinq exemplaires, dont un à Berlin et deux dans les collections du Cabinet des médailles de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Ces deniers sont attribués à Castelnau-le-Lez (Hérault).

CARLOMAN II

(879-884)

Carloman II is the second son of Louis II le Bègue and Ansgarde. After the death of his father, in 879, he became king of France jointly with his brother Louis III. In 880, he received Aquitaine, Burgundy, Septimania, the marquisate of Toulouse and part of Provence. In 882, when his brother died, he reigned alone. He died in 884 of a hunting accident.
