Historical background

(Ve - fourth century BC)

Mint in Caria began at the very end of the seventh century or early sixth century BC in Halicarnassus (GC. 3472) with electrum staters. The silver coins are introduced in the second half of the fifth century BC with currencies Aeginetan weight. The Archaic period ends at the beginning of the fifth century after the Ionian revolt. Many currencies are still not allocated or should be. The findings, few, poorly localized or broken after their discovery do not facilitate this work, however, so important for the history.
