(Second - first century BC)

After the peace of Apamea in 188 BC, Rhodes covered her independence. The island experienced twenty years of prosperity until the Romans proclaim Delos a free port in 167 BC after the defeat of Perseus, king of Macedonia. The Rhodian fleet had supported the Macedonian king. The Rhodian trade declined after this date. In 88 BC, after the massacre of 80,000 Romans and Italians in Asia Minor, Mithridates VI of Pontus Rhodes besieged unsuccessfully.
