Carausius was appointed commander of the fleet responsible for fight against pirates francs and Breton. Proclaimed august 286, he grabbed Brittany and part of the west coast of northern Gaul between the Seine and Scheldt. He was assassinated at the end of 293 by Allectus, the prefect of the Praetorium.
