Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Carausius Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Carausius pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse legend : M[ON]-E-TA AVG.
Reverse description : Moneta (la Monnaie) debout à gauche, tenant une balance de la main droite et une corne d'abondance de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Moneta Augusti”, (la Monnaie de l’auguste).

Buste stylisé. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletés.

CARAUSIUS

(late 286-293)

Carausius is named commander-in-chief of the fleet in charge of fighting against Frankish and Breton pirates. Proclaimed august in 286, he seized Brittany and part of the west coast of northern Gaul, between Scheldt and Seine. He was assassinated at the end of 293 by Allectus, his praetorian prefect.
