Historical background

CARAUSIUS in the name of DIOCLETIAN

(291-293)

During the de facto truce established after the failure of the reconquest of 289, Carausius, from 291 and until the beginning of 293, minted very rare coins with the effigies of Diocletian or Maximian Hercules. These coins all have the particularity of having on the reverse the tripling of the G to indicate that there are three augusts: Carausius, Diocletian and Maximian. There are also rare coins, in the name of Carausius, with the same plural mark on the reverse. The appointment of two new Caesars on March 1, 293 put an end to this fiction. After the death of Carausius, in the summer of 293, his successor Allectus was also never recognized by the central empire..
