Historical background

CARACALLA

(05/27/196-04/8/217)

Augustus

The Antoninianus was created in 215. This coin, characterized by the presence of the radiate (solar) crown, weighs an average of 5.07 g and is cut at 64 to the pound (1 pound = 325 g) with a title of 50% cash. The denier, meanwhile, weighs an average of 3.38 g, or a size of 96 to the pound with a silver content also of 50%. So the Antonine weighs one and a half times the weight of a denarius and runs for two deniers.
