Historical background

Cappadocia - Cappadocia KINGDOM OF - ARCHELAUS

(36 BC - 17 AD)

Archelaus did not belong to the Cappadocian royal family. He is the son of Glaphyra concubine Antoine and Archelaus, high priest of Comana. He was a descendant of General namesake Mithridates VI of Pontus. Inducted by Antoine, he joined Octavian Parès Actium and kept his throne. He married in second nuptials, Pythodoris daughter Polemon II, king of Pontus. A daughter of Archelaus married Alexander, son of Herod the Great. After the death of Augustus, Tiberius in 17, he was summoned to Rome before the Senate. He died shortly after. Cappadocia became a province.
