Historical background

CAPPADOCIA - CAPPADOCIAN KINGDOM - ARCHELAUS

(36 BC - 17 AD)

Archelaus did not belong to the Cappadocian royal family. He is the son of Glaphyra, concubine of Antoine and Archelaus, high priest of Comana. He was a descendant of the homonymous general of Mithridates VI of Pontus. Enthroned by Antoine, he joined Octave pares Actium and retained his throne. He married in second marriage, Pythodoris the daughter of Polemon II, king of Pontus. One of Archelaus' daughters married Alexander, son of Herod the Great. After the death of Augustus, under Tiberius in 17, he was summoned to Rome before the Senate. He died shortly afterwards. Cappadocia then became a province.
