Historical background

CAMPANIA - SUESSA AURUNCA

(3rd century BC)

Suessa Aurunca, located not far from Naples on the slopes of Vesuvius corresponds to the modern city of Sessa Aurunca. It was in antiquity the main city of Aurunces. First opposed to Rome, it was entrusted to Titus Manlius in 340 BC. A lukewarm ally of the Urbs, it revolted in 315 BC and its territory was ransacked. A Roman colony under Latin law was founded in 313 BC. A flourishing city at the end of the Republic, it sided with Sylla during the first civil war. Augustus founded a new colony on his territory: Colonia Iulia Felix Classica Aurunca.
