Historical background

CAMEROON - FRENCH MANDATE TERRITORIES

(1919-1945)

(1919-1945)

The 1884 treaty, which had fought the Germans in Cameroon, was confirmed by the Berlin Congress the following year. Gustav Nachtigal occupied the new colony. In 1911, to address the Moroccan crisis, France ceded to the Germans part of the Congo, which is attached to Cameroon. The territory had 761,000 km2 and was populated by 2.5 million people in 1914 including 2,000 whites. The Treaty of Versailles (June 28 1919), Cameroon was occupied since 1916 by the French and British, becomes a mandate given to French. Cameroon is one of the first territories to join Free France 27 August 1940. At the end of the war, the mandate is converted into guardianship and Cameroon obtained its internal autonomy in 1958 and independence on 1 January 1960.
