Historical background

CAMBRÉSIS - SIEGE OF CAMBRAI - JEAN DE MONTLUC (lord of Balagny) French occupation

1595

Louis de Berlaimont (1570-1596) succeeded Maximilien de Berghes as Archbishop of Cambrai. Protected from the Spaniards, he was driven out in 1581 by the French party. Philip II of Spain came to besiege the city, but had to break free at the approach of the troops commanded by the Duke of Alençon, brother of Henry III. Obsidional coins were minted by the governor of the city, Baron d'Inchy, before the arrival of François d'Alençon, Duke of Anjou, who became protector of the city. Jean de Montluc, lord of Balagny, was appointed governor of Cambrai by François d'Alençon. After the death of his protector, he weaves between the Leaguers, the Spaniards and the Protestants. He becomes almost independent and is named hereditary prince by Henri de Bourbon, future Henri IV. In 1595, Louis de Berlaimont returned to lay siege to Cambrai, aided by the Spaniards. Cambrai fell into their hands on October 7. Louis de Berlaimont is reinstated, but loses the right to mint coins.
