Obverse description : Écu de France couronné. Le tout dans un grènetis. De part et d'autre du motif central quatre poinçons avec à gauche 15, à droite 81, au-dessus CB et au-dessous un écu brochant sur une aigle bicéphale.

Reverse legend : LISSE.

Commentary

Cette monnaie de siège présente les mêmes caractéristiques que l'exemplaire conservé au Cabinet des médailles, décrit et dessiné dans l'ouvrage de Robert : on trouve en effet la légende FARNCISCO au lieu de FRANCISCO. D'après Robert, cette monnaie avec le titre de protecteur fut certainement frappée le 20 août 1581, soit trois jours après la fin du siège de Cambrai, lorsque le duc d'Alençon eut le titre de protecteur de Cambrai.

In 1581, the Prince of Parma, governor of the Netherlands, succeeded in taking Cambrai after a long siege. The Duke of Alençon entered Cambrai on August 17, 1581 and distributed "a good number of gold and silver triangular medals"; the Prince of Parma retired to Valenciennes. On August 20, 1581, the Duke of Alençon solemnly received in the cathedral of Cambrai the title of protector of the city. On June 10, 1584, Henry III inherited his brother's rights to Cambrai.
