Obverse description : Pietas (la Piété) voilée et drapée assise à gauche, tenant une patère de la main droite et le bras gauche, appuyé sur une statuette de femme vue de face (Spes = l’Espérance ?).

Obverse translation : “Caius Cæsar Augustus Germanicus Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestate // Pietas”, (Caius césar auguste germanique grand pontife revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne// la Piété).

Reverse

Reverse legend : [D]IVO - AVG/ S|C.

Reverse description : Scène de sacrifice devant un temple hexastyle orné d’une guirlande qui tombe de chaque côté ; le fronton triangulaire est orné de plusieurs personnages et surmonté d’acrotères constitué par deux victoires, d’un quadrige vu de face, conduit par Auguste ; à gauche d’une statue de Romulus à droite, d’un groupe constitué par Énée, Anchise et Ascagne ; devant le temple, Caligula, voilé et drapé debout à gauche, vêtu de la toge, tenant une patère de la main droite, sacrifiant au-dessus d’un autel paré et allumé orné d’une guirlande avec à gauche, un victimaire, lui présentant le taureau et à droite, un aide.

Reverse translation : “Divo Augusti”, (Au divin Auguste).

Légende ponctuée au droit. Grâce à la numismatique, nous pouvons suivre l’évolution architecturale de ce temple entre Caligula et Antonin le Pieux et les changements intervenus dans son organisation, passage de l’ordre ionique initial à l’ordre corinthien.
