Historical background

CALIGULA

(03/16/37 to 01/24/41) Caius Cæsar Augustus Germanicus

Caligula was born August 31, 12 at Antium, ninth child of Germanicus and Agrippina the former. He lost his father at 19 and his mother was disgraced by Tiberius and died in exile at 33. He is the great grand-son of Augustus by his mother and grand-nephew of Tiberius by his father. Caligula succeeded Tiberius after assassinated (according to Suetonius). His real name was Gaius Caesar. His nickname comes from a military boot "caliga" child he wore when he was with his father in the army. After a promising start in 37-38, sick and unstable due to a heavy inheritance, he was assassinated in 41.
