Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Obverse description : Tête d’Apollon à droite, chevelure en grosses mèches enroulées ; la base dou cou ornée.
Reverse
Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Cheval à droite, pourvu d’oreilles proéminentes ; un sanglier aurige au-dessus de la croupe ; un oiseau debout devant le cheval et une flèche entre les jambes du cheval.
Commentary
Ce très rare quart de statère a la particularité de présenter la base du cou ornée (cf. LT. D22) au droit et le champ du revers incisé de façon régulière. L’oiseau est lui aussi bien net.
Poids relativement faible pourrait faire penser à un exemplaire fourré “en dépit de son aspect normal” (?)
Cet exemplaire devait figurer dans le Nouvel Atlas en DT. 99B. Il en est absent et le 99B présente un arc bandé avec la flèche entre les jambes alors que sur celui-ci l’arc est absent.
This very rare quarter stater has the particularity of presenting the base of the neck decorated (cf. LT. D22) on the obverse and the field of the reverse incised in a regular manner. The bird is also very clear. Relatively low weight could suggest a stuffed example “despite its normal appearance” (?) This example should appear in the New Atlas in DT. 99B. It is absent and the 99B presents a drawn bow with the arrow between the legs whereas on this one the bow is absent

GALLIA - CALETI (Area of Pays de Caux)
(4th - 2nd century BC)
The Calètes, people of Belgium, were sometimes considered Armoricans. They occupied part of the current department of Seine-Maritime with the countries of Caux and Bray. Their neighbors were the Véliocasses, the Bellovaques, of whom they were clients, and the Ambiens. The Calètes would have provided a contingent of ten thousand men to the Belgian coalition under the leadership of the Bellovaques in 57 BC. In 52 BC, they participated with the seven Armorican peoples in sending twenty thousand men for the relief army, destined to deliver Alesia. In 51 BC, they took part in the revolt of the Belgian peoples, led by the Bellovaci. Two of their main oppida were in Bracquemont and Fécamp. In Roman times, their capital was Juliobona, Lillebonne.
