Commentary


Pour ce type, M. Crawford a relevé une estimation inférieure à dix coins de droit et à onze coins de revers. C’est l’un des deniers les plus rares de la République et un très bon exemple de la restauration d’un type monétaire ancien.
For this type, Mr. Crawford noted a lower estimate of ten obverse dies and eleven reverse dies. This is one of the rarest denarii of the Republic and a very good example of the restoration of an ancient monetary type.

Quintus Caecilius Metellus is the son of Quintus Caecilius Numidicus. He began his career in Africa during the war against Jugurtha with Marius. Pontiff in 97 BC, praetor in 89 BC, grand pontiff in 82 BC, he joined Sylla and shared the consulate with him. Proconsul in Spain between 79 and 72 BC, he was beaten by Sertorius in 79, then in 76 BC when he shared command with Pompey. Sertorius is finally assassinated in 72 BC He shares the triumph in 71 BC with Pompey.
