Historical background

BULGARIA - ALEXANDER I

(1879-1886)

Born in Verona in 1857 and died in Graz in 1893, Alexander I was Prince of Bulgaria from 1879 to 1886. A nephew by marriage of Alexander II of Russia, he was elected Prince of Bulgaria thanks to Russian support. In power, he sought to free himself from Russia, which then conspired to bring him down. Attacked by Serbia, he had to abdicate to avoid the occupation of Bulgaria by the Russians.
