En 1878, la Bulgarie devient une principauté. Le col de Shipka fut l’objet de quatre batailles opposants les ottomans aux forces russo-bulgares en 1877 et 1878. Ces derniers réussirent à prendre la passe et à défaire les turcs. C’est un des symboles de l’indépendance bulgare..
