Historical background

BRITTANY - DUCHY OF BRITTANY - JOHN V

(1399-1442)

Jean V (1389-1442) succeeded his father at the age of 10 while Philippe le Hardi was declared regent of the duchy. Major in 1404, John pays homage to Charles VI. He will weave between Charles VI, the Dukes of Burgundy, Jean sans Peur, Philippe le Bon and Henri V. He does not participate in the battle of Agincourt. His reign was tainted by his fight against the Penthièvre family. He pays homage to Charles VII, approaches Bedford and promises to support Henry VI, then abandons the English party. He died in 1442.
